Simplomacy Dev Blog #3

Hi everyone!

I hope you all had a great week and have been keeping safe since the last dev blog. Unfortunately, there will not be one next week as we will both be in Prague, celebrating my stag do.

Right, since our last dev blog, we’ve added:

Gameplay
  • Certain leader policy traits are now based on the country’s Social Progress Index (e.g. more progressive countries get more environmentalists or progressive leaders)
  • Other changes include tweaks like environmentalist leaders won’t be resource-hungry or nukers, leaders that are peacekeepers won’t be warmongers
  • Added 10 more lots of civilian names for individual countries
  • Added the ability to resign
  • World Leaders are now elected at different dates on a new game (initially all leaders were elected on the date you start playing)
  • Added nuclear bombs to nuclear countries
  • Added 2 new events
New Event

I won’t spoil all the fun by showing every event that gets added into Simplomacy, but one that we think you will like is the new meteor event. There’s a random chance of a meteor landing in a country that can then be harvested for resources, these resources are currently iron and gold. There will be some more resources that can be harvested from them once they’ve been added to the game.

Here’s one of the possible scenarios which you will come across:

Depending on different world leaders’ personality traits, these scenarios will be different. One example is, if a leader is jealous, their relationship will worsen with the country that has the meteor land.

Nuclear Bombs

Judging by how hungry our followers are for war, this addition will probably get your juices flowing. This is just the first step in a long walk of getting war implemented into the game. The way this is currently set up is, all countries that have an existing nuclear arsenal will now be assigned nukes at the start of the game, so be careful who you upset.

We will also be adding in a game mode as free DLC, which will strip each country of all resources and weapons. From here, if you would like to be the first country to create a nuclear bomb, you will have a list of different resources you will need to gather/obtain.

Resources
  • Added 8 new resources
  • Clicking an owned resource now shows some basic info and options available to that resource
  • Some resources may not be able to be sold to the private market
Historical Events
  • Added a screen to view historical events where your actions may influence what gets recorded in your territories history
  • NOTE: We’re not sure if we’ll add many pre-defined historical events given the nature of the task (think how many territories there are with all their major events, probably not gonna happen).

Here’s an early look at the historical events screen, things may change but this will give you an idea of the direction we’re going with it.

Options
  • Added the ability to view areas in sq mi instead of km2 (selected in the options)
Free DLC
  • Began work on ‘New Game +’ which is a free DLC that will feature different options to tweak your new games. The first option we have added is ‘Neutral Relations’ where no existing relations between territories exist and everyone is neutral
Other
  • Added the beginning of a biography (just displays tenure)
  • Made viewing the list of countries load faster
  • Other optimisation work
